1961

A small pharmaceutical plant located in Pavia and called Laboratorio Farmaceutico Dott. Cipelli was acquired by the multinational Merck Sharp & Dohme, which developed it over the following decades, creating, among other things, 1 automated warehouse, 2 oral solids production units (Production 1 and 2) and various support areas.

As part of a process of reorganization of global production capacity, Merck Sharp & Dohme announces the decision to cease operations in Pavia. At the time, the site was already recognized as an Italian excellence.

The Savio Group decides to take over the production site in Lombardy, thus ensuring the continuity of production and safeguarding employment. Savio Industrial is born to contain the production plants of the Savio Group, specialized in the production of pharmaceuticals (Pavia) and Medical Devices (Ronco Scrivia). At the same time, an important collaboration is born between Savio Industrial and Merck Sharp & Dohme, which will then continue with the company Organon.

One year after the acquisition of the Pavia workshop, a new department for the production of non-sterile oral liquids was created, while the production staff was doubled in the following 4 years.

A new powder granulation and drying module (HSM2) is created. In the same period, the new IBN Savio Research and Development laboratories are inaugurated at the Pavia plant, which, in addition to the Group's specific projects, also support the production processes always with a view to continuous improvement.

An investment program is launched to expand the production of medical devices in foreign markets both within the EU and outside the EU (including the UK and Brazil, for which the Ronco Scrivia site obtains ANVISA certification)

In the same year in which the milestone of 1 billion/year of tablets produced is exceeded, an agreement is also reached with the multinational Organon for the worldwide production of a pharmaceutical specialty in the cardiometabolic area. An additional powder granulation and drying module (HSM3) is therefore created with double the production capacity compared to the one already in use and an increase in volumes of approx. +130% is expected in 2026 compared to 2020.

The History of Ronco Scrivia

Carlo Savio, already owner of the SAVIO pharmacy in Recco (GE) which still exists today, creates a production plant called the SAVIO National Chemical Institute to produce on an industrial scale the preparations validly formulated in his pharmacy.

Emilio Stefanelli, who had been pursuing an entrepreneurial adventure in the pharmaceutical sector for a few years together with his friend Antonio Fogli, acquired the production plant located in Ronco Scrivia, deciding to keep the name “SAVIO”, which would become the reference brand for the entire Group over time. Immediately after the acquisition, an investment and expansion program was launched on the site.

As part of a corporate restructuring process aimed at increasing the value and performance of the SAVIO Group, Savio Industrial was created to contain the group's production plants. Among these, the Ronco Scrivia site specializes in the production of class III medical devices, while the Pavia site specializes in the production of pharmaceuticals.

The construction of a cogeneration plant is completed, which will allow for the saving of approximately 10,000 tons of CO2 per year.
